PBX

PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange, which is a private telephone network used within a company or organization. The users of the PBX phone system can communicate within their company or organization and the outside world, using different communication channels like Voice over IP, ISDN or analog. A PBX also allows you to have more phones than physical phone lines (PTSN) and allows free calls between users. It also provides features like transfers, voicemail, call recording, interactive voice menus (IVRs) and ACD call queues.

PBX phone systems are available as Hosted or Virtual solutions (sometimes also called Centrix), and as inhouse solutions to be used on your own hardware.

PBX phone systems are usually much more flexible than proprietary systems, as they are using open standards and interfaces. Modern PBX phone systems are based on standard hardware, which is cheaper and can easier be replaced than a closed systems.

Hosted PBX

Hosted PBX is a service where the call platform and PBX features are hosted at the service provider location. The business end users connect via IP to the provider for voice service.

How Does it Work?

As computer network installers, we advise our clients based on their specific network requirements.  1000Mbps is currently the standard speed for new computer network installations but many clients with older 100mbps networks will find that the speed provided is perfect for their needs.  If you find that your network is running slow our computer network installers can analyse the traffic flow on your network and propose a solution to address your specific requirements.  We look at the following areas in particular:

  • Switches: are the computer network switches the correct type based on the application, i.e. does the client require a managed or unmanaged switch?  Are the current switches rated to the correct speed and are they from a trusted manufacturer?
  • Cabling: Is the current cabling old and faulty or rated for too low a speed?
  • Wall boxes: Are the wall boxes or jacks wired correctly and in good condition?

Generally speaking we would suggest that if you copy a lot of high-capacity files such as images and videos and 3D models, that you go for the highest affordable speed computer network available to you but on the other hand, if you only use your network to browse the Internet and email, even a 100mbps computer network will suit you just fine

What is POE?

POE stands for Power Over Ethernet.  Basically it allows network installers to power certain devices over the network cables they install.  These devices often include CCTV cameras, VOIP handsets and wireless access points.  The way it works is we install a POE switch, which is the central hub that network connections plug into, or we provide POE injectors for each device that requires it.  

The advantages are:

  • Removal of unsightly power cables for cameras or wireless access points at the devices themselves
  • Ability to power devices in positions where there is no existing power point (such as ceilings or outside)
  • All power for devices in one central location where you can then install an inverter to keep them running during power cuts

Many VOIP providers supply handsets that have 2 data connections on them.  This allows you to plug the one end into your existing computer network jack or patch lead and the other end into your PC or laptop.  This allows you to install VOIP handsets without having to install additional computer network points to run the VOIP handsets.  The disadvantage with this approach is that the handsets themselves are normally rated at 100Mbps and therefore limit the speed of your computer network connection  to your PC to 100Mbps.  Another problem is that should the handset become faulty, the PC will also be disconnected from the network.  We suggest additional computer network points be installed for each VOIP handset.  Of course this means additional spend on infrastructure so we advise the client and they can then decide whether the increased speed and reliability is worth the additional expense
