The Difference Between CAT5e and CAT6e Cabling

Currently there is a great deal of confusion among Ethernet cable buyers concerning whether to purchase Cat5e, or to use Cat6. Most of this confusion comes from a misunderstanding by the buyer that buying Cat6 cable will give them an "all gigabit" network. This is not the case. Unless every single component in the network is gigabit rated, then you will never have a gigabit network, because your network will always run at the speed of your slowest device. Cat5e cable of good quality can run near or at gigabit speeds, it just cannot be "certified" for this use. By comparison, Cat6 is designed especially for gigabit use, and is certified to operate at said speed.

The choice between the 2 comes down to a matter of price and future-proofing.  CAT6 can be up to 3 times as expensive as the more common CAT5e cabling but in order to properly future proof your network cabling infrastructure we would suggest going the CAT6 route.  For Small office and home installations CAT5e will suffice but for large networks we would suggest CAT6.

How to Decide?

Many clients ask us whether they should go for a wired or a wireless network.  Since we do both we advise our clients according to their specific requirements.  There are a number of factors that determine whether to go for wired networking or wireless networking:

  1. Size of Network: For a network over the size of 10 connections we recommend a wired network.  The reason for this is that on a wireless network, all connected devices share the bandwidth, e.g. a 150mbps wireless network with 10 users on it will allow a maximum of only 15mbps per user
  2. Critical Business Applications: For any devices running a critical business application such as Pastel we would recommend connecting them to a wired network
  3. Data-Hungry Applications: Any applications that transfer a large amount of data between a server and the application should be connected to a wired network

The perfect setup for most companies is, in fact, to have a combination of both wired and wireless.  Wired points in all offices for users with desktops and laptops to connect and a wireless network for roaming users and mobile devices such as iPads and Smartphones.  Contact us for more information about network installations

The maximum length for a CAT5e cable is 100 metres.  Any cables longer than this will begin to suffer from packet loss during transmission of data over the cable.  In order to get around this limitation, we install network switches to bridege 2 cables where the distance needs to be over 100 metres.  Fiber Optic cabling does not have this limitation. Please contact us for more information about network installation

Are you trying to decide between fiber optic and copper cabling for your computer networking application? Fiber optics have completely revolutionized communications over the past couple of decades and here are some reasons to consider it:

  • Because fibre optic cables are not copper-based, there is no interference betweeen them and electical cables, therefore in factory installations they can be placed in the same conduit as the electical cables
  • Speed:  Fiber optic cables transfer data at a much faster rate than traditional cabling
  • Length: Fiber optic cables can go much further than copper-based cabling
  • Outdoor applications: Fiber optic is very resistant to corrosion and the elements, which makes it perfect for using in an outdoor setting, perhaps to link 2 nearby offices

If you are experiencing intermittent disconnections from the Internet or your server, you may need to consider upgrading your wired or wireless network infrastructure. Upgrading your networking or installing higher capacity wireless access points can help you overcome these disruptions to productivity and keep you and your staff connected.

Loss of data on your computer network and errors could very easily be as a result of attenuation (signal weakening) on your current network. Aging cables, interferance and natural causes such as rodents could cause you to lose speed on your network.  Network cable testing pinpoints exactly where the problematic areas are on your computer network.  If you believe your network might not be running optimally, contact us.  We can give you a no-obligation quote on bringing your computer network back up to full speed again.

Computer network installations have the following benefits:

  • Improved productivity: when your office is connected via a computer network your people are too.  Everyone can access information at a much faster rate
  • Reduced costs: computer networks reduce the costs of having email and couriers documents to other employeees
  • Greater data security
  • Centralised backups: All PCs on a computer network can backup to a centralised location, such as a server

Many VOIP providers supply handsets that have 2 data connections on them.  This allows you to plug the one end into your existing computer network jack or patch lead and the other end into your PC or laptop.  This allows you to install VOIP handsets without having to install additional computer network points to run the VOIP handsets.  The disadvantage with this approach is that the handsets themselves are normally rated at 100Mbps and therefore limit the speed of your computer network connection  to your PC to 100Mbps.  Another problem is that should the handset become faulty, the PC will also be disconnected from the network.  We suggest additional computer network points be installed for each VOIP handset.  Of course this means additional spend on infrastructure so we advise the client and they can then decide whether the increased speed and reliability is worth the additional expense

POE stands for Power Over Ethernet.  Basically it allows network installers to power certain devices over the network cables they install.  These devices often include CCTV cameras, VOIP handsets and wireless access points.  The way it works is we install a POE switch, which is the central hub that network connections plug into, or we provide POE injectors for each device that requires it.

The advantages are:

  • Removal of unsightly power cables for cameras or wireless access points at the devices themselves
  • Ability to power devices in positions where there is no existing power point (such as ceilings or outside)
  • All power for devices in one central location where you can then install an inverter to keep them running during power cuts

As computer network installers, we advise our clients based on their specific network requirements.  1000Mbps is currently the standard speed for new computer network installations but many clients with older 100mbps networks will find that the speed provided is perfect for their needs.  If you find that your network is running slow our computer network installers can analyse the traffic flow on your network and propose a solution to address your specific requirements.  We look at the following areas in particular:

  • Switches: are the computer network switches the correct type based on the application, i.e. does the client require a managed or unmanaged switch?  Are the current switches rated to the correct speed and are they from a trusted manufacturer?
  • Cabling: Is the current cabling old and faulty or rated for too low a speed?
  • Wall boxes: Are the wall boxes or jacks wired correctly and in good condition?

Generally speaking we would suggest that if you copy a lot of high-capacity files such as images and videos and 3D models, that you go for the highest affordable speed computer network available to you but on the other hand, if you only use your network to browse the Internet and email, even a 100mbps computer network will suit you just fine
